In his role, Ken Brumer talks about giving his team the time and tools needed for success and even when serving clients in critical situations, why showing up for each other is a fundamental part of Curation Health culture.

Q: What is your role at Curation Health?

A: I am the director of Engineering. I lead the engineering team, including sourcing and hiring new talent and driving the technical direction of our product.

Q: Can you share some insight on your professional background before joining Curation?

A: I have been programming professionally for more than 24 years in a variety of industries, most recently for healthcare companies and I have a background in applied mathematics.

Q: What made you join Curation Health?

A: The combination of working in healthcare, working with this great group of people and making a difference in people’s lives was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Q: Is there a specific value that you align most with based on Curation’s company  values?  Why?

A: Culture. For me, culture is a very important aspect of a company and it shows up pretty much every day. If you have a company with a positive culture, it has such a huge impact on how we treat each other, how we work and how we interact with each other. We show up for each other, period. It makes for a stark contrast to companies who don’t prioritize it. It makes work a pleasure, even when working as hard as we do.

Q: When it comes to engineering at Curation, what are you most excited about for 2021?

A: There are so many answers! I think the growth of both the company and the engineering team is very exciting. We are really at a pivotal moment in our growth curve that is wonderful to be a part of. The direction we are taking the product will offer us many technical challenges/opportunities. Finally, the opportunities for my own personal growth as well as the growth of my team members will be very rewarding.

Q: Is there anything unique to how Curation approaches engineering vs. prior companies you have worked for?

A: The approach to engineering at Curation is very pragmatic. We take the best of what we have learned and apply it to continually innovate and serve our customers. We are a group of talented engineers. As a manager, I try and give my team the tools and time needed for them to do their jobs correctly, efficiently and with autonomy. Additionally, since we are a remote company, mentorship and pairing are very valuable tools to stay connected.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: Craft beer drinking and woodworking, but not in that order.
